Senior Accountant
Location:

Occasional visits to the entrances of Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve
Working schedule:
Full time, 5 days per week, 9am to 5pm
Background:
The Association for the Protection of Jabal Moussa (APJM) is a Lebanese not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 2007 with the aim to conserve the biodiversity and preserve the cultural heritage of Jabal Moussa mountain and surrounding villages.
As part of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve program, APJM strives to reconcile the conservation of Jabal Moussa with the sustainable development of its surrounding communities.
APJM thus relies on funded projects and income-generating programs to secure income to achieve its mission.
Purpose of the position
The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in ensuring sound financial management, transparency, and accountability within the Association for the Protection of Jabal Moussa (APJM). The role involves overseeing day-to-day accounting functions, donor and grant financial management, compliance with organizational policies and donor regulations, preparation of financial reports, and capacity-building of APJM team. The Senior Accountant ensures the organization maintains accurate and timely financial information to support decision-making and donor reporting.
A. Financial accounting & reporting
- Maintain accurate accounting records in line with international accounting standards and APJM policies.
- Prepare and review reconciliations for all accounts, including cash, bank, clients, suppliers, payroll, and other balance sheet accounts, ensuring accuracy and timely resolution of discrepancies.
- Coordinate and oversee monthly stock counts with the logistics/warehouse team, and prepare monthly stock reconciliations, investigate variances, and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure proper documentation and filing of financial records in line with APJM policies and donor requirements.
- Manage daily cash payments, ensuring proper authorization, documentation, and accurate recording in the accounting system.
- Register and reconcile daily sales and purchases, ensuring all transactions are properly supported with the required documentation.
- Coordinate with suppliers, customers, banks, NSSF agents, and beneficiaries to ensure timely execution of transactions and appropriate documentation, in line with APJM’s procedures and donor requirements
B. Donor & grant management
- Review grant agreements, donor contracts and project documentation to extract financial requirements.
- Update and monitor on a monthly basis the remaining balance for each budget line in project budgets and ensure that the project does not overspend on any budget line.
- Track expenditure against donor budgets and ensure costs are allowable, allocable, and reasonable.
- Prepare donor financial reports in compliance with donor requirements
- Support project managers with financial insights to ensure effective budget utilization.
- Provide financial support during proposal development, including budget preparation.
- Train project staff on procurement processes and project financial requirements, and support staff with procurement process, ensuring proper documentation and accountability
C. Compliance & audit
- Ensure compliance with local tax laws, statutory requirements, and APJM financial policies.
- Coordinate and support external audits, ensuring audit recommendations are implemented.
- Coordinate and support the NSSF agent, ensuring all salaries and contributions align accurately between the organization’s payroll records and the social insurance authority.
- Manage and maintain HR files, APJM’s contracts, and payroll/NSSF administration, and make sure payments are on time, and documents are updated at all times
- Produce consolidated financial reports and analyses for project and program managers (monthly), Board (annual), and donors (monthly or as required)
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of donor rules and ensure financial policies are aligned.
Required qualifications and skills
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is required; a Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of continuous accounting experience, with at least 3 years in an NGO or with donor-funded projects.
- Previous experience with project/grant accounting, audits, and budget management is required.
- Solid knowledge of accounting principles, standards (IFRS) and proficiency in accounting software.
- Excellent Excel skills for financial analysis, reporting, and data management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Arabic and English (French is a plus)
- High ethical standards, integrity, and commitment to transparency.
